Out of the entire BMW line up, the exciting Z4 must be the least advertised model of them all. Despite its qualities, its looks and, in the end, the legacy of its name (Z), the model is seldom the recipient of the car maker's attention, at least when compared to say the BMW X1.

Still, the Geneva Auto Show is a chance for the model to shine again, and this time in new clothing. The German auto maker thought it would be best to bring the Z4 back into the spotlight by introducing the Design Pure Balance package, a set of upgrades for both the interior and the exterior.

The most noticeable change at the exterior is the addition of Mineral White metallic paint, a first for the model, accompanied by the non-metallic and metallic exterior paint finishes. The interior receives a facelift as well, with BMW going for a more luxury look and feel.

BMW showed up to Geneva with a new concept called the Vision ConnectedDrive. As you can see, it’s an almost impossibly low roadster with trick, Kaiser Darrin-style sliding doors. It also shows off BMW’s new interior design language that they’re calling “Layering.” Says BMW, “The term ‘layering’ describes a new approach to the BMW Group’s concept of design and its design language, redefining the way surfaces, interfaces and materials have been treated in the past.” Oddly, BMW had very little to say about the design, powertrain and/or handling of the Vision vehicle at the press conference, instead they chose to focus on the technologies available to the driver and passenger. It’s all part of what they are calling ConnectedDrive.

The first is convenience. BMW (and most other brands) already offer a form of this connected technology. For example, when your phone connects via Bluetooth to your car. However, BMW aims to take it a step further. Imagine your car then reading your calendar, figuring out that you have a meeting in 25 minutes, noting the address and calculating the fastest route possible (taking traffic information into account, of course) and then telling you where to park when you get there. We like it.

We want to love the 2010 BMW M5. Who wouldn't, with its race-derived, 500-horsepower V-10 engine, and a 0-60 time of just 4.5 seconds?

Despite its charms, we can't get past the M5's serious flaws, the result of timing and a product at the end of its life cycle. An overabundance of technology almost kills the joy of that huge power. For starters, BMW's semi-manual SMG transmission is only for fans of a truly harsh shift experience. You'll need to choose the no-cost six-speed manual to enjoy the M5 to its utmost, thanks to crisp throws, precise gates, perfectly arranged pedals, and surprisingly smooth clutch engagement.

But you can't opt out of the technology that commands the M5's suspension, steering, and throttle inputs. They offer a bewildering 279 combinations through an MDrive menu that can be linked to the steering wheel's MDrive button, which might as well be a panic button for users who can't figure it out.

Then there's BMW's frustrating iDrive controller for audio, navigation, and climate settings. It's been improved for this model year but still could use its own community-college course for first-time drivers.

There's a new M5 on the way - and from what we've seen from the new-generation BMW 5-Series sedan and 5-Series Gran Turismo hatchback, the picture's going to improve, radically.

In just 12 minutes, the German constructor BMW “shipped” the 30 units of the special edition M3 ‘Frozen Gray “, developed exclusively for the North American market in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of M3, the oldest and most famous creation of the M Motorsport division.

Designed to celebrate 25 years of M3, this special edition ‘Frozen Grey‘ is characterized by a new painting called “Ice Grey”, intended to accentuate the aggressive lines of the model, a two-tone interior – black and red – and the desired package sporting “the Competition Pack”.

Inspired by the competition, the package reduces the ground clearance by about 1cm, and includes specific 19-inch wheels and dual-clutch sequential gearbox M-DCT, which reduces the time needed to reach 100 km / h in 0.2 seconds, now accomplished in 4.5 seconds.

The engine, the known 4-liter V8 with 420 horsepower in turn, does not change.

BMW had just opened its phone lines for the new Frozen Gray M3 and, like a salesperson’s dream, the U.S only car sold out. All 30 examples were gone in the blink of an eye.

Larry Koch, M brand manager for BMW of North America said, “The Frozen Gray M3 is a striking work of sculpture, speed, and style, and perfectly marks the 25th birthday of the M3 model. I’m personally thrilled to see that our customers are as excited about it as we are. We filled the thirty reservation slots within twelve minutes and took the names of at least fifty alternates in the first hour.”

The U.S only Frozen Gray M3 carried a $10,000 premium for the paint job, other mandatory upgrades, and other options that aren’t found on the base M3. The Frozen Gray M3 had a price tag of $77,600 and was covered in a Space Gray base coat and then in a BMW ColorSystem silk matte clear coat. This paint job is what sets the car apart from all other M3s.

Inside, the limited-run M3 will get a Fox Red and black bi-colored Novillo leather interior.

BMW says that the Frozen Gray M3 will get the same motor as the base M3, a 414 horsepower 4.0-liter V8 and the M double clutch transmission

A Bimmer Today reader somehow got a series of leaked images of a BMW 5-Series Touring M-Sport Package catalog in his possession. The new package will be available for order this autumn and is rumored to be a preview of the design language from the future BMW M5 F10.

The M Sport package includes a choice of 18" or 19" M light alloy wheels in double spoke design, new front bumper with larger air ducts, side skirts, a modified apron, and dark chrome tail pipes. The interior will get sport seats covered in an exclusive Alcantara combination, an M leather steering wheel, and the roof lining in anthracite for more athleticism. It will also feature M door sills, an M foot rest, an M shift knob, and sets of decorative trim for the dashboard and door panels.

As usual, the M-Sport Package comes with M Sport suspension. It will be offered in a choice of seven exterior colors.

As the fifth-generation BMW 3 Series plows through its fourth year of production, we've begun to catch glimpses of the sixth-generation car set for 2012. Today, we've captured the first images of the next BMW 3 Series Wagon.

Known as the Touring model in Europe, the 3 Series Wagon is expected to ride on a longer wheelbase than the next-generation sedan. Other than the chassis stretch and wagon bodywork, expect the car to be virtually identical to the sedan. From these pictures and past spy shots of the sedan, we can see that the next-generation 3 Series, codenamed F30, will get a more upright nose (likely to meet pedestrian crash requirements) that will bring its styling more in line with the new 5 and 7 Series cars.

BMW lengthened the new midsize 5 Series, ported over virtually all the high-end options offered on the luxury 7 Series, and created what may be the world's finest car, at least in the $50,000 (starting price) category. The new design erases some of the quirks of the 2004-2009 5 Series and now non-Bimmerphiles will have a hard time telling it from the longer 7 Series. Which is nice because an entry BMW 535i runs $20,000 less. The car is nearly flawless to drive and to ride in.

BMW teases the new X3 in The Netherlands

BMW’s X3 model is up for a replacement soon and the company has started to tease the 2011 compact SUV. The teasing exercise which is made up by a couple of detailed images can be seen on the website of the company’s Dutch division.

We can see a portion of the hood which, just like other new BMWs has various design lines giving it a more dynamic look. There is also an image of the left taillight which has hints of the X1’s taillight but I prefer the on the X1. But of course we will have to wait and look at the whole car before we give our final verdict.

First Drive: 2011 BMW 135i DCT

Dual-clutch gearboxes. Not yet common parlance for the average buyer, but a frequent topic of debate among enthusiasts. The rift: rowing your own cogs versus having a computer do it for you. There's a purity of experience in working the clutch and the shifter yourself that simply doesn't come through in the flapping of a paddle. But does that really make the manual better?

2011 BMW 135i DCT

No, not really. Not if by better you mean "faster." Because dual-clutch gearboxes are brutally fast, far less prone to user-induced error and generally just better for driving a car hard: you can keep your feet over the go/stop pedals, heel-toe is unnecessary, and both hands stay on the wheel at all times.

If by better you mean more fun, however, the manual wins every time. Sure, it's pretty cool clicking through the gears video-game style as you run up to and beyond 100 real-world mph, but the novelty quickly wears off and you're left either driving for maximum pace or finding a 7/10s drive a bit less enjoyable.

So what's this meandering diatribe all about? The 2011 BMW 135i with DCT, of course. While Volkswagen and Audi have had similar DSG systems in their cars for some time now, the entry of the DCT (BMW's moniker for their dual-clutch unit) into the 1-Series lineup, it's accessible in a relatively affordable, rear-wheel-drive luxury sports coupe. And that's pretty cool. Except when it's not.

BMW’s Hybrid Future May Include 3 Series

BMW was initially slow to build hybrid cars, but now it is turning just about everything into a hybrid. In a speech to shareholders on Tuesday in Munich, Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the BMW AG board of management, not only confirmed the rumored production version of the 5 Series ActiveHybrid concept, but also said a 3 Series hybrid is likely coming, too.

The gas-electric 5 Series could be on road next year, Mr. Reithofer said, and he added that the company was “anticipating the hybridization” of other models, “such as the BMW 3 Series.” He said that BMW would choose “the most suitable hybrid solution for the respective model.”

The ActiveHybrid 7 is already on the market, and these two new models would give BMW a full range of eco-cars. Mr. Reithofer’s speech touched on a number of green themes, including an initial $100 million investment in a joint venture based in the United States with SGL Carbon to provide lightweight carbon-fiber parts for future production cars. And he talked about the battery electrics BMW has been testing. “Our global field test with the Mini E is a great success,” he said. “Many enthusiastic customers for e-mobility already exist today.”

The electric Mini Es are headed for fleets in France and China in 2010, Mr. Reithofer said, and test fleets of BMW-branded electric cars, built in Leipzig, will be on the road next year.

I would give high praise to BMW for its clean and modern-looking interior design, and it is no surprise that there was more than enough head and leg room for most drivers and passengers. Those seeking more room to the rear can opt for the Li model that is five inches longer than the test car and offers true stretch-out room.

There are few cars on the road that deliver the perfect balance between luxury and driving pleasure -- with enough of the latter to please even those addicted to 120 mile per hour romps on the autobahn. The 7-series does all that with ease, and for that reason is now named by this driver as the best luxury car yet driven.

OK, you knew this would not be cheap and it isn't. With $17,525 in options, the tested 750i sold for $100,980.

German automaker BMW is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the famous win it recorded with its 328 model at the Mille Miglia endurance race, by bringing a special edition Z4 Roadster. Known as the BMW Z4 sDrive 35is Mille Miglia Limited Edition, only 99 units of the car will be manufactured.

The special edition is based on the recently revealed top-of-the-range Z4 sDrive35is. The car is thus powered by 3.0-liter inline six cylinder unit that produces 335 bhp and up to 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. This can be increased through overboost to 500 Nm (369 lb-ft).

The changes to the Mille Miglia model are mainly cosmetic. The Z4 sDrive35is Mille Miglia comes standard with a M-power body kit and a special Polaris Metallic grey color offset by a matte black radiator grille. A couple of 1000 MIGLIA badges and 19-inch dark wheels complete the exteriors.

The success of the BMW X6 has raised the possibility of an X4 at BMW, Autocar has learned.

The giant sports-coupe/off-roader has been an unexpected success for the firm since it was launched in 2008. BMW has sold 80,000 units worldwide since its launch, which is double its initial predictions.

A BMW source revealed to Autocar that a smaller car in the same mould as the X6, likely to take the X4 name, was under consideration, but it had yet to be given the green light for production.

"We haven't made any firm decision," said our source, "however, the X6's success shows there is a continued demand for sporty off-roaders."

The X4 could be spun off the new X3's platform; that car is set to be launched later this year. It's styling could draw influence from 2001's X Coupe concept, as well as the X6.

When you’re a manufacturer like BMW, one of your biggest competitors is yourself. Meaning, you’re in the business of producing some of the best vehicles in their respective segments, so every new model introduced must, by necessity, be an improvement over something that is already among the class leaders.

The BMW X5 has definitely been among the very best “sports-SUVs” on the market since its debut in 1999, combining an unabashedly muscular appearance with impressive driving dynamics and a fair degree of comfort thrown in for good measure. The 2011 version, recently unveiled at the 2010 New York Auto Show, continues the theme.

For the new model year, the X5 has undergone only minor changes in appearance and the average onlooker would be hard pressed to tell the 2011 version apart from its predecessor.

At the front, the BMW gains a new fascia with repositioned fog lamps and larger side air intakes. The optional Xenon headlamps feature the company’s trademark LED corona rings. The front skid plate is painted matte silver. And more of the fascia/front bumper pieces are painted in matching body colour as opposed to flat black.

To the rear, the catalogue of changes is similar. The reshaped rear bumper surrounds two new trapezoidal-shaped tailpipes. The redesigned taillights now incorporate LED light banks. The skid plate is painted—you guessed it—matte silver. And the rear fascia has traded in some black covering with body colour paint.

The net effect is subtle, yet effective: The BMW X5, in this writer’s opinion, has always been one of the more aggressive-looking sports-SUVs around and the 2011 version has added refinement without sacrificing on any of the attitude.

Inside the passenger cabin, the new X5 is a direct carryover from last year’s edition. In terms of quality, the X5 strikes a reasonable balance between function and flash—it isn’t the most luxurious SUV in this segment, but it offers all the creature comforts you’d expect.

Look no further than the X5, X6, and 5-series Gran Turismo sitting in a row at your local dealer if you need proof. Now it's time for the Bavarians to show off a new design that sticks with the brand's core values of "dynamic performance and high-quality elegance" while making the rest of us scratch our heads.

BMW's says its classic design staples are included in the Grand Coupe: A long wheelbase, domed hood, a setback greenhouse, coupe-style roofline, and short front overhang. The concept also has what BMW somewhat confusingly calls a "flat silhouette" that, when combined with coupe-like proportions, aims to evoke a high-performance aesthetic.

Between the LED front headlights is BMW's modern interpretation of its hallmark kidney grill. It sits flat on the nose, which itself carries an extension that aims to create a "forward-pointing dynamic." Air inlets stretch into the side section, which BMW says gives the front a wide appearance.

BMW Announces Pricing for the New 528i Sedan

BMW has announced pricing for the all-new 2011 BMW 528i Sedan. The new 528i will arrive at BMW Centers in July and is priced from $45,425 including $875 Destination & Handling. Based on the all-new, 6th-generation BMW 5 Series, the new 528i receives BMW’s 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with magnesium-aluminum construction and 240 horsepower, plus BMW’s new 8-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. Despite these enhancements, the base MSRP is $1,400 lower than the 528i’s 2010 predecessor.

As on any other BMW vehicle, BMW Ultimate Service, with $0 maintenance for the first 4 years or 50,000 miles, is included.

“When we announced the pricing for the 535i and 550i earlier this month, people were thrilled with what great value they represented,” said Jack Pitney, Vice-President of Marketing for BMW of North American. “With the 528i BMW is uniquely positioned to offer a full range of midsized luxury-performance Sedans that, true to the philosophy of EfficentDynamics, offer better performance and improved efficiency than their predecessors at prices that are even more competitive.”

The all-new 2011 BMW 5 Series combines a whole new look, inside and out, with new powertrain options and even more cutting-edge technology. Design features emblematic of BMW are to be found at the front with its kidney grille inclined slightly forward. The new 5 Series chassis is 55% stiffer than its already-impressive predecessor.

The new 528i is equipped with BMW’s celebrated 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, now enhanced to produce 240 horsepower and 230 lb-ft of torque. These figures represent improvements of 10 and 30, respectively, over the previous-generation 528i. As a result, the new 528i is expected to accomplish the 0-60mph sprint in 6.6 seconds (preliminary), compared to 7.1 seconds for the previous model. The normally aspirated engine is equipped with Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and weighs approximately 355 lbs thanks to its exotic magnesium-aluminum engine block construction. EPA mileage estimates will be available closer to the July on-sale date.

In addition to the standard 8-speed automatic transmission, new 17-inch light alloy wheels with all-season run-flat tires are standard on the 528i, while the optional Sport Package includes 18-inch light alloy wheels with high-performance run-flat tires. Inside, drivers will find standard lumbar support and a larger standard moonroof.

Options and packages for the 528i are very similar to the 535i Sedan with a few exceptions. Xenon headlights will be a stand-alone option on the 528i. The Dynamic Handling Package will provide Driving Dynamics Control and Dynamic Damping Control, which is quick enough to adjust the damping at a rear wheel after a front wheel has encountered a road imperfection at highway speeds. Integral Active Steering is not offered on the 528i.

Sales for the 12 months to the end of February were up 15.3% at 173,911 units. "We saw growth in Asia, in particular, but we also made gains in many markets in Europe, Africa and the Americas. In key sales markets such as the U.S., the automotive sector is also showing encouraging signs of a gradual recovery," said Ian Robertson, BMW board member responsible for sales and marketing. BMW always has been the iconic yuppie-mobile. The vehicles can be described as being for those who don’t trust anybody older than 30.

In reality, the closest thing between BMW and Mercedes-Benz is Germany. BMW is viewed as the “driver’s car” whereas M-B is thought of more in terms of luxury (not that BMW isn’t).

BMW has added enough segments through the years that upon nailing down a customer it could hold him within the family for a lifetime.

1 Series

Don’t be fooled by the title “1 Series” and mistake it for a ticket to the dance. It’s hardly an entry-level vehicle. Yes, it’s a smaller car – but it has the power and performance of a higher-level “Bimmer.”

The 1 Series draws its inspiration from the legendary BMW 2002 model of almost 40 years ago. It was the first “gotta have” vehicle for young drivers and European car enthusiasts.

Hamann BMW X6 M Tycoon Evo M

Hamann Motorsport will officially unveil its 670hp/493kW strong and 300km/h fast Tycoon Evo M based on the BMW X6 M at the 80th Geneva Motor Show. The program includes a bodykit, performance upgrade, stainless steel exhaust system, wheel set and interior refinements.

The body kit holds front and rear wing extensions made of light composite materials. These let the body expand by 60 millimetres. The designers enhanced the sides with the newly designed side skirts. The distinctive hallmark of the front is the apron with the four striking LED daytime running lights. There are enlarged air inlets in the front and the carbon bonnet allows an optimised air ventilation of the engine compartment. At the X6 M rear, Hamann replaces the original skirt. This makes room for the earthy sounding sports exhaust system with the centrally positioned double end pipes. The rear view of the Tycoon Eveo M contains newly designed rear- and roof spoilers.

When BMW debuted the X6 M last year, we were initially a bit skeptical about how the porky crossover (still having a hard time calling it a Sports Activity Coupe) would be received by enthusiasts. However, after a good deal of seat time, we learned that while the X6 M is ridiculously unnecessary, it's a total blast to drive, especially on the track. Now, enthusiasts looking to get some of the X6 M's mystique without shelling out $89,000 can have their own unique version of the X6, thanks to new accessories from BMW Performance.

The list of optional modifications starts with two different power kits, depending on which engine the stock X6 is equipped with. xDrive35i models gain an additional 20 horsepower and 37 pound-feet, bringing the total output to 326 hp and 332 lb-ft. The xDrive50i gets a bit more oomph, with power increased to 448 hp (up by 41) and 479 lb-ft (up by 37). Keep in mind, these power figures are based on of the 2011 X6, which has slightly different powertrains from the current model. What does it all mean? Six-cylinder X6s will be able to do 0-60 runs in just 6.5 seconds, and V8 models will do it in just 5.2.

If and when BMW brings a diesel motor to the U.S. under the wavy hood of the new 5 Series, it might not be the one we sampled in our recent drive of the 2011 BMW 530d. In Europe, BMW offers three turbocharged diesel engines for the 5 Series. You have your choice of a frugal turbocharged inline-4 in the 520d, a base-level turbocharged inline-6 in the 525d and the higher-power version of the same turbocharged inline-6 in the 530d. To further complicate matters for the diesel-averse, the twin-turbo inline-6 diesel that BMW currently sells in the U.S. for the 335d and X5 diesel isn't like any of these Euro diesels, as it's meant to be the most powerful six-cylinder oil-burner currently on the market.

The BMW M1 was the latest BMW amongst the series to have an engine in rear center position. This model has been revisited through the BMW M1 Homage in 2008. The model series of the BMW Concept is still awaited but it would be interesting to imagine what would be a model of sport entry level by the German manufacturer, a car smaller and more accessible than the legendary M1 and which would compete with the Porsche Cayman or Audi TT. This concept could be equipped with a V8 (the one of the next M5) combined with a manual gearbox or 7-speed automatic. And in the continuity of BMW concepts in recent years (Active E & Vision Efficienct Dynamics Concept) a hybrid version would complement the offer.

First Look: 2010 BMW Z4 sDrive35is

Waiting for a new take on the M roadster? You’ll have to make do with the 2010 BMW Z4 sDrive35is. It may not wear that fabled “M” badge, but the new range-topping Z4 model is faster than the last Z4 M models produced.

As indicated by the awkward name, the Z4 SDrive35is makes use of the same twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 as the Z4 sDrive35i, but BMW’s increased the output to 340 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. An “overboost” button allows the driver to command even more torque -- 369 lb-ft -- at the driver’s whim.

Mated to a modified form of BMW’s seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox or a six-speed manual transmission, the boosted 3.0-liter can slingshot the Z4 sDrive35is from 0-62 mph in 4.8 seconds, making it three-tenths of a second faster than an sDrive35i. In comparison, the last Z4 M coupe and roadster models blasted from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

BMW to introduce electric concept car at 2010 Detroit Auto Show

An electrically powered version of BMW’s 1 Series coupe will be introduced Jan. 11 at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Known as the BMW Concept ActiveE, the vehicle has a motor located in the rear axle that generates 170 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque. It can hold four passengers, has a seven-cubic foot luggage compartment and can accelerate from a stop to 60 mph in approximately 8.5 seconds. The range is estimated at 100 miles.

For 2011, BMW is adding a new trim level to its recently redesigned Z4 convertible hardtop roadster. A new 335-horsepower model with an adjustable sport suspension, which is borrowed from the company’s M lineup of performance cars, now sits atop the range. BMW has dubbed this model the Z4 sDrive35is. There’s also a Z4 sDrive30i and a Z4 sDrive35i, which has the same engine as the new 35is but puts out less power and doesn’t have the performance and body modifications of this new entry.

The sDrive35is gets a specially tuned exhaust, the M suspension that lowers the car 10 millimeters or a third of an inch, unique 18- or optional 19-inch wheels, matte aluminum trim and special silver side mirrors no matter the car’s exterior color.

The only reason we can tell this Z4 isn’t given an M designation is that the engine isn’t as powerful as the current Ms in the lineup, which bottoms out with the 414-hp M3. Even with the “paltry” power ratings, the Z4 sDrive35is is predicted to go from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds.

Pricing hasn’t been announced, but the 2010 Z4 sDrive 35i starts at $51,650; expect the “is” to cost more than that. More photos below.

BMW trying to figure out what to do about its electric Mini test

BMW Mini E's is plying the streets of the east and west coasts, being driven by consumers in an experiment in electric transportation.

There are about 600 pure electric versions of BMW's Mini running around. The German automaker is now about six months into its test of how the electrics will hold up in real-world consumer tests. Now it 's trying to figure out what to do next.

"We're looking at whether to extend (leases) with the existing clientele or (find) a new clientele next year," said Ian Robertson, BMW's worldwide sales and marketing chief in an interview with Drive On earlier this month.

But he says BMW is learning a lot from the experiment:

For one, he says, there's a big problem with different cities that typically blanket a metro area having different requirements for the garage recharging equipment required to own an electric car. In fact, there's not even a common recharging plug depending on what country you're in, Robertson says.

BMW 7 Series gets a version of the twin-turbo inline-6 from the 5 Series.
BMW said it will begin selling the 2011 740i and 740Li sedans next spring in the U.S., featuring a version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine that powers the BMW 535i and other models.

In the 2011 7 Series models, the twin-turbo 3.0 will deliver 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. It will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

BMW said the new 740i and 740Li will be available with such options as an M Sport package, Driver Assistance package, Luxury Seating packages, Rear Entertainment package and the BMW Individual Composition package.

For model year 2010 in the U.S., BMW sells the 750i and Li, powered by a 400-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, and the 760Li, powered by a 535-hp twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12. Prices currently range from $81,280 to $137,450.

BMW Goes Luxury Green Electric Car with Concept ActiveE

BMW, which earlier this year was showcasing for American drivers its upcoming hybrid ActiveHybrid X6 crossover utility vehicle, is back again now at greener cars with the all-electric Concept ActiveE. BMW says this is its latest electric vehicle that explores “solutions to minimize environmental impacts while preserving the kinetic driving experience for which BMW has long been known.”

The ActiveE, debuting at the upcoming North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2010 in Detroit and related to the Mini E currently being field tested, integrates “drive components within the existing vehicle package of the BMW 1 Series Coupe.” BMW says of this car’s electric motor, located in the vehicle’s rear axle, that it “delivers 125 kW/170 hp and provides maximum torque of 250 Nm / 184 lb-ft.” It also reportedly accelerates the vehicle in less than 9 seconds from zero to 100 km/h (0-60 mph in approx. 8.5 seconds).

BMW, partnering with SB LiMotive, is introducing into the ActiveE a “new, advanced lithium-ion battery pack” which will provide an “approximate” range of around 100 miles in typical everyday use. Charging time in North America, using a high-current residential wall box, will be around 4.5 hours. Top speed of the ActiveE is “electronically limited” to 90 MPH to help save on battery life, which will likely disappoint many BMW fans. Still, this is a solid movie forward by a well loved luxury car maker to bring electric vehicles into more homes. It is said a production version of this vehicle might be ready late next year.

Electric BMW 1-Series revealed

BMW has revealed official images of an all-electric concept based on the 1-Series Coupe, ahead of its debut in Detroit. Called the Concept ActiveE, it represents the second phase of BMW’s project i, following the MINI E, an ongoing venture to bring a range of zero emissions vehicles to market.

Gone is the MINI E’s front-wheel drive, two-seater layout – a restriction thanks to the batteries sitting where the rear seats should be. With the Concept ActiveE clever packaging has produced space for four passengers, a 200-litre boot and weight distribution similar to the standard car. In keeping with BMW’s philosophy, power is fed to the rear wheels, ensuring the driving experience should be instantly recognisable to current BMW owners.

Power comes from a new electric motor integrated into the rear axle. With 168bhp, 250Nm of torque available from zero rpm and a kerbweight of 1,800kg performance is impressive. A 0-37mph sprint is completed in 4.5 seconds, 0-62mph takes just 9 seconds and the top speed is limited to 90mph.

A bank of lithium-ion batteries sits where the combustion engine would normally be, and features a new stable temperature regulation function to keep it cool. Charging takes place via either a standard home socket or an industrial high-current outlet, the latter tops up the batteries in just three hours, giving a real-world range of 100-miles.

Besides the circuit-board inspired livery and the lack of an exhaust pipe, the visual changes from a standard 1-Series Coupe are minimal. However, a new ConnectedDrive service allows owners to use their mobile phone to check the charge status of their car remotely, as well as activate the heating and air-conditioning systems.

Six-Cylinder Option Returns On 2011 BMW

In line with the automaker’s EfficientDynamics engineering philosophy, BMW announced today that its flagship sedan would get a smaller twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine pumping out 315 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 330 pound-feet of torque from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm.

The unit is based on the same 3.0-liter block found in a host of other BMW models, including cars like the 335i and Z4 sDrive35i. In the 2011 BMW 7-Series, the award-winning engine will reside in the new 740i and 740iL long-wheelbase variant.

Both models will go on sale as 2011 models in spring 2010. Pricing will be announced closer to the sales launch. Despite being the new entry-level models for the 7-Series range, they will be available with a full complement of options and packages, including the M Sport Package, Driver Assistance Package, Luxury Seating Packages, Rear Entertainment Package, and even the BMW Individual Composition Package.

2011 BMW 740i and 740Li

We’re accustomed to seeing eight- and twelve-cylinder engines nestled beneath the hood of a BMW 7-series, but it’s been a long time -- nearly a decade, in fact -- since we’ve seen BMW’s flagship powered by a six-cylinder.

For 2011, however, such a model returns. Both the new 740i and long-wheelbase 740Li make use of BMW’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6, found in the likes of the 335i. Power is boosted slightly to 315 hp at 5800 rpm, and 330 lb ft of torque from 1600 through 4500 rpm. As no X-drive model is in the cards, power is routed to the rear wheels via a ZF-sourced six-speed automatic transmission.

Apart from the powertrain, there’s hardly a difference between the 740i and its V-8 and V-12 siblings. All options available on the 750 and 760 (including the M Sport package and upgraded rear seats) are available on the 740i and 740Li.

BMW has yet to announce pricing for either the 740i or 740Li, but we’d expect a short-wheelbase car to sticker just underneath the 750i’s base price of $82,280. Look for both the 2011 740i and 740Li to arrive in U.S. dealers in the spring of 2010.

2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

After recently introducing the BMW 7 Series Hybrid, the Bavarian manufacturer is now offering the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid, its second gasoline- and electric-powered hybrid model. In fact, the X6 will be the first hybrid vehicle sold by BMW since it will arrive here in December, several months before the 7 Series. This is because, like all other models produced at the Spartanburg, North Carolina plant, the X6 ActiveHybrid will be offered on the North American market first, which is not the case for the 7 Series.

Of course, the X6 is a sport SUV and BMW doesn’t intend to try to rival the Toyota Prius: far from it. Rather, the manufacturer wants to offer an engine that performs like a V8 but with fuel consumption similar to that of a V6. I don’t think that having a BMW X6 in with a “Hybrid” logo in your driveway will win you any prizes for environmental activism, but at the very least, it will give the well-to-do a clear conscience and save them from a few disapproving looks.

Hybrid or diesel?
Although the manufacturer offered the X5 with a diesel engine, you have to wonder which technology of the future – hybrid, fuel cell or diesel – the manufacturer will ultimately choose. Given the uncertainty, none of the technologies can be put aside so as not to miss the boat. Moreover, according to Jochen Frey, BMW’s director of communications, many technologies will be available in the future and the choice will be a matter of how you plan to use the vehicle. However, since BMW tends to combine diesel with performance, wouldn’t it have made more sense to offer the X6 with a diesel engine and the X5 with a hybrid engine considering the purpose of each? In Europe, the X6 is already offered with a diesel engine which, unfortunately, is not the case here, although it’s a safe bet that an X5 ActiveHybrid is soon to follow. Problem solved...

The BMW X6 ActiveHybrid (its official name) has few differences compared to the conventional versions. With the exception of a few emblems that identify it, its engine type is drawing all the attention. The only version offered is a very well equipped model with the same engine as the X6 50i, a 4.4-litre biturbo featuring 400 horses for a torque of 450 lbs-ft. Throw in a couple of 2.4 KW electric motors for a total power of 480-hp and 575 lbs-ft of torque and you have the most powerful SUV hybrid currently on the market with a 0-100 km/hr time of 5.6 seconds. Not bad for an environmentally-friendly vehicle…

This engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic continuously variable transmission and, as with all versions of the X6, all-wheel drive comes standard. Developed jointly with the now defunct Daimler-Chrysler Corporation, BMW’s technology is similar to Toyota’s in that it allows you to drive in electric mode. In the case of the X6, you can accelerate up to 60 km/hr or drive a distance of about 2.5 kilometres in electric mode but it’s very hard to do without making those following behind impatient. This is a common criticism of all hybrid vehicles. There’s a world of difference between theory and practice.

BMW Bringing Trio of Hybrids to LA Auto Show

BMW recently announced pricing for its ActiveHybrid X6, but they aren’t done just yet. In addition to the 480-hp crossover, BMW is bringing its ActiveHybrid 7, and Vision EfficientDynamics concept car.

As you might have guessed the ActiveHybrid 7 is a hybrid 7-series. The hybrid 7 features a twin-turbo “High Precision Direct Injected” V8 with a 3-phase electric motor that gives the eco-luxury ride a total combined output of 455 hp and 515 lb-ft of torque. Along with the 8-speed automatic transmission the ActiveHybrid 7 gets 15-17% better gas mileage. According to our calculations, that translates to about 26 mpg. But this hybrid is no slouch, sprinting to 60 in 4.7 seconds. That’s a little quicker than the Lotus Evora that was just announced.

The real eco-car at BMW is the Vision EfficientDynamics concept, which gets a staggering 62.6 mpg. Power comes from a 3-cylinder turbodiesel and an electric motor at each axle. Following the path of the other BMW hybrids this thing still hauls. Producing over 350-hp and almost 600 lb-ft of torque the concept hybrid rockets to 60 in 4.8 seconds. The immediate take-away from pictures is the aerodynamics of this lightweight automobile. We also wouldn’t be surprised if this thing showed up in the upcoming Tron.

BMW launches Roadster Z4 sports car in India

BMW India debuts the roadster segment with the launch of the new Z4 priced at Rs 60 lakh. The company is aiming to sell a round 40 units of Z4 in a year, CNBC-TV18’s Swati Khandelwal-Jain reports.
This second generation two-seater sports car will be imported from BMW's plant in Regensberg in Germany. It will sport a six-cylinder petrol, 258 bhp engine, which can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 5.8 seconds with a top speed of 250 km. The Z4 will compete with the Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster and the soon to be launched Nissan 370 Z.
Peter Kronschnabl, President, BMW India said that the company is very confident of maintaining the number one position. “We have seen a 18% jump this year versus last year so far. You will see couple of more launches early next year.”
BMW already holds the number one position in India's luxury car market. The company is all geared up to launch the new 7 Series which will be a completely built unit with an expected price tag of Rs 90 lakh.

BMW unveils new 5 Series sedan

BMW officially released the new 5 Series sedan at the Olympic Stadium in Munich,Germany. Internally known as the F10, this is the all-new upgrade we were talking about in our E-Class versus A6 versus 5 Series test in the November 2009 issue of OVERDRIVE. Officially the 2011 5 Series shared its platform with the latest 7 Series (and therefore, with the Rolls-Royce Ghost). The car itself is 10 cm shorter in wheelbase than its larger cousins. But, it is also over 7 cm longer than its direct competition, the new E-Class.

The sharing of the platforms, according to BMW, allows significant sharing of components and the joint development and now the joint production — at BMW's Dingolfing plant — will give BMW a big efficiency boost. The platform sharing also means that the strut-setup in the old BMW 5 (the E60) has been replaced by a four-link setup as in the BMW 7er. The F10 also replaced the E60's active steering with a new electric power steering assist mechanism, to reduce parasitic power losses — and therefore boost economy. The system is similar to the 7 Series' as expected and given that we found nothing to complain about in the 7, the 5 should be good too. On the options list - we're not sure that this option will come to India - is active rear wheel steering. And the F10 also boasts active roll control, adaptive damping - both optional and brake energy regeneration.

The interiors bear even more 7 Series cues. The dash layout, for instance, is turned to face the driver. Also facing the driver is the fourth generation of iDrive. All the models will get an in-dash seven-inch LCD for audio and aircon information display with the navigation-equipped models going up to a 10-inch screen. The car will also get an electro-mechanical parking brake. The BMW ConnectedDrive suite of driver assistance gizmoids now include a parking assistance, a collision warning with brake application in the Active Cruise Control system - and that also works with the Stop & Go system, a new speed limit warning. The night vision and HUD will be there, of course, but the night vision can now pick up individual persons and there's a lane departure warning system as well.

The new BMW 5 Sedan has been announced with a fair range of engines. The top engine is a turbocharged V8. Other petrol engines include a turbocharged petrol six cylinder and two normally aspirated petrol sixes. In the diesel range are two turbocharged six-cylinder options and a four-cylinder turbo with common rail direct injection.

New BMW 5 Series Has Hints of the 7 Series

The new BMW 5 Series has grown a few inches and will weigh more than the outgoing model.

What does the new BMW 5 Series have to do with a new Rolls-Royce Ghost? Each is being built on a modified BMW 7-Series chassis.

BMW unveiled the new 5 Series – the sixth generation of the midrange German luxury car – this week in Munich. The unveiling, at the stadium where Munich hopes to host the 2018 Olympic Games, was attended in person by BMW executives and employees, and broadcast on television in Europe.

But BMW aficionados elsewhere in the world were rather curiously shortchanged. The company says it is not planning on introducing the 5 Series lineup at any of the upcoming auto shows – a departure from tradition.

The changes to the vehicle include styling touches meant to make the 5 Series look, feel and drive more like the pricier 7 Series. To that end, the 5 Series has grown a few inches in most directions. And it weighs in at several hundred pounds heavier than the equivalent outgoing models. Despite a 7 Series lookalike grille treatment, the new 5 bears a lot of resemblance to the smaller 3 Series lineup, especially in profile.

The 5 Series is likely to come with four engine options, including a 6-cylinder turbo-diesel.

The new chassis has a double-wishbone front suspension with cast-aluminum control arms, as well as BMW’s Integral-V multilink rear suspension.

In Europe, the 5-Series range will include five different sedans and seven different powertrain choices — one V-8, three in-line 6s, two in-line 6 diesels and one in-line 4 diesel. The United States is likely to get a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 with 407 horsepower, single-turbo 3-liter in-line 6 (306 horsepower), a 3-liter in-line 6 (258 horsepower) and a turbocharged 3-liter in-line 6 diesel (245 horsepower).

The scene is the Cadillac CTS-V Challenge, where a handful of journalists and private car owners have been invited to compete against Robert A. Lutz, the irrepressible 77-year-old General Motors vice chairman, and his mighty 556-horsepower CTS-V sport sedan.

But the Bimmer I’m driving in the rehearsal laps is a rather unlikely competitor for the CTS-V. It is neither the M3 high-performance coupe nor the M5 über-sedan, but the X6 M, a 5,300-pound battering ram that looks like what Batman would drive, if Batman drove a crossover S.U.V.

Verily, the X6 M is the world’s fastest crossover, an awards category you won’t find at a Sierra Club fund-raiser. From the Infiniti FX50 to the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, the BMW tops them all, whether the criteria are pure speed or handling control.

As it turned out, the night before the challenge, BMW got cold feet about entering the X6 M, so I had to drive the CTS-V instead. But BMW need not have worried: the X6 M wouldn’t have beaten the quickest CTS-V drivers, but its effortless below-three-minute lap times proved it would have blown people’s minds and made Bavaria proud.

Spectators asked to peer under the hood; the co-owner of the track, Ari Straus (who drives in the Grand-Am road racing series), was intrigued enough to request wheel time. He instantly ripped off elegant laps that spotlighted the BMW’s torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system.

To some, the X6 M may seem a design achievement on par with Alexander McQueen’s 10-inch stiletto heels: Shocking, titillating — but still a cruel male fantasy of dubious utility.

The difference? You can dance in this BMW.

Figuring that some owners would be unfulfilled by the 400 horses in the standard X6 xDrive 50i, BMW has girded that car’s 4.4-liter V-8 with a pair of expensive twin-scroll turbochargers — cleverly nestled in the valley between the engine’s two banks of cylinders — along with new pistons and cylinder heads and a host of other improvements. The result is 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, with peak torque on tap from a low 1,500 r.p.m. up to 5,650.

2010 BMW X6 M

BMW has officially released images of its X6 M high-performance crossover, which will be on display at the New York Auto Show 2009. Built to compete with Prosche’s Cayenne Turbo and other high-performance crossovers, the X6 M may very well be in a class of it’s own.

The X6 M uses a version of BMW’s latest twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. Output is pegged at 555 horsepower at 5,750 rpm and peak torque is 501 pound-feet, available between 1,500 and 5,650 rpm. The car can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, according to the automaker.

BMW packed the new 7-Series sedan with optional gadgets ranging from radar-assisted cruise control to blind spot detection. There’s even a heads-up display. Pick all the high-tech options and you’ll add $26,000 to the car’s already hefty price tag. But the coolest feature is the new night-vision system that likens a twilight drive to a Special Forces recon mission.

The Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection system significantly advances the first-gen system found in the last 7-series by adding people-spotting technology that distinguishes between animals and humans. The system was developed by the Swedish firm Autoliv Electronics. It is the latest evolution of technology that Lexus and Mercedes-Benz also have offered since Cadillac brought it to the automotive sector in the 2000 Deville sedan.

Since then, thermal imaging has made way for far- and near-infrared cameras that detect even the smallest changes in temperature. BMW’s passive system uses far-infrared technology to scan for heat, whereas Mercedes’ near-infrared system illuminates the road with projected infrared light. The BMW system stands apart for its extreme depth, clarity in rain and ability to minimize extraneous information. Despite the added safety such systems offer, Cadillac and Lexus dropped them because few people bought them. But BMW, like Mercedes, still sees a market for it.

we can see the huge rear wing and the lower lip in front. The car also looks lower to the ground. We can assume it has lost some weight, and has been fitted with some of performance racing parts. It looks right at home on the 'Ring.

It seems like BMW is working on a hard core version of the M3 after seeing this white M3 taking some very fast laps around the Nürburgring. But what is it? Since BMW ruled out any CSL version of the current M3 the closest guess is that it could be a road going version of the GT4 racecar. A BMW M3 GT4 Street? So, what are the changes to a normal M3. Well, except from the rear wing that not even Stevie Wonder would miss, there is a lower front lip on the front spoiler. Car is also lowered and probably about 100 kg lighter. If this is really a M3 GT4 Street, we guess that some of the race typical gizmos will find its way even in this version, making it an even greater experience to drive.
With the Audi RS5 just around the corner, this could be what BMW really needs right now to keep up the interest for the M3 until the all new 3-series and M3 shows up in late 2011.

TUNED BMW 3-SERIES TOURING BASED ON M5

though there have been a couple of murmurings over the years, BMW has never come up with a touring version of the latest M3. The E91 does get 'M Sport' treatment, but evidently German tuner Manhart Racing felt that this just wasn't good enough.

But rather than kidnapping the M3's V8 for the job, it has gone one step further and shoehorned in the 5.0-litre V10 from the M5. This may sound like a terrific idea, but it does rather beg the question of why you wouldn't just buy an E61 M5 touring instead.

But Manhart has an answer for that. By tweaking the ECU and adding an HJS quad-pipe stainless-steel exhaust, this M3 touring actually produces 50bhp more than the M5 touring, peaking at 550bhp. What’s more, though there are no figures for this yet, you can bet it'll weigh closer to the E91's 1580kg than the larger E61's 1955kg.

While they were raiding the M5 parts bin, Manhart's finest also brought over the 7-speed SMG gearbox and limited-slip diff, and performance figures are predictably impressive. Manhart claims 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds and a 200mph top speed, which, if true, is pretty astonishing. Helping to keep all this grunt on the road, Manhart also fits the estate with Bilstein PSS10 coilover suspension and six-piston calliper brakes from Stoptech.

To complete the 'M' effect, Manhart has custom made lots of exterior bits to make the E91 looks like an M3, including a full body kit, 'powerdome' bonnet and suitable ostentatious 20-inch black alloys. Inside things are as you'd expect, with alcantara and carbon fibre strewn about merrily, and body-hugging sports seats.

With a price tag of 120,000 euros (£111,876) this does cost around £30k more than the M5 touring, but Manhart willl also fit any or all of the bits to your existing E91 if the mood takes you.

Bmw adding two production shifts at its assembly plant in Spartanburg

Two production shifts will be added to the workweek of the BMW plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
What this means, of course, is that 700 additional workers will be required. Previous BMW workers will be prioritized for employment. While the first shift would be filled immediately, the second will only be added in November.

The reason for the increase in production is the 3.6% sales increase in September, which is a remarkable record compared to an industry decrease of 26%. In a press release, Josef Kerscher, president of BMW Manufacturing, said that the company continues to guarantee the plant’s flexibility to efficiently respond to market demand. Specifically, BMW stated that for it to meet customer demand, its plant must maintain the ability to adjust shifts and staffing levels as needed. Since 1994, the Spartanburg, S.C. plant has produced more than 1.5 million vehicles.

V10-powered BMW M3 Touring

Manhart Racing has launched a V10 version of the BMW M3 Touring.

Replacing the 4.2-litre V8 usually found in the front of the M3 is the 5.0-litre V10 engine from the M5, mated to the seven-speed SMG ‘box from the same car. This gives it a claimed 0-62mph time of 4.3secs.

Other mechanical tweaks include the addition of the M5’s limited-slip differential, a modified ECU and a new stainless steel exhaust system equipped with four tailpipes.

Styling changes include a new bonnet, a new front bumper, new side skirts and wider rear-wheel arches. It rides on 20-inch aluminium alloys and its tyres at the front are 255/30ZR20 and 295/25ZR20 at the rear.

Inside, it gets heated BMW performance sports seats, a full leather interior with Alcantara roof and door lining and a BMW performance steering wheel with illuminating indicator switches, acceleration and quarter mile time displays.

Prices for the Manhart racing BMW M3 Touring are from 120,000 euro (£112,000) for the complete car, while its package can also be fitted retrospectively.

BMW 550i a sports car

We asked this question when we looked at the base price for the 2010 BMW 550i - $80,400 - versus that of the BMW 535i xDrive, which starts at $68,900. Sure, the 360 h.p. that come with the 550i's big V8 compared with the 300 generated by the 535i's twin-turbocharged V6 hint at better performance. And there is a host of standard amenities on the 550i, such as BMW's M Sport suspension and M Sport's sweet-sounding exhaust that you won't see on the 535i.

Yet, the only way to truly answer this question succinctly is to put the 550i through its paces over a week's worth of driving. And what better place to do that than in the southwestern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, where, near Heidelberg, the Autobahn leads to narrow, winding country roads that reach down into the valleys surrounding the Neckar River and up into the hills where ancient castles, cloisters, cathedrals and wineries are ready to be explored?

This part of Germany is known for its old wealth and culture. Here, the BMW 5 Series sedan with its classic BMW grille and sweeping xenon headlights is at home. More precisely, the 550i is a four-door sedan with graceful lines that tone down the ``Hey, look at me in my BMW'' sentiment some other models project.

BMW Brings Back the C1 Electric Scooter

As a study for a safe urban motorcycling project, BMW Motorrad has resurrected their C1 covered two-wheeler for a one-off electric concept they call C1-E.

The C1-E was designed to highlight safety in low-emissions “single track” vehicles designed for urban use. As such, it sports the same roll cage, seat belt and windscreen as the erstwhile production C1. While BMW said that future single-track production vehicles may feature low-emission gasoline engines or electric motors, the C1-E swaps the original C1’s Rotax 4-stroke gas engine in favor of a Vectrix electric motor and lithium-ion battery.

Like Arrested Development, the Apple Newton and Tom Waits, the original C1 was an oddball that didn’t quite fit in to an established category but still received critical praise. A sit-down scooter with a crumple zone and aluminum roll cage, the C1 was intended to entice minicar buyers with an even smaller alternative that offered the same level of crash protection as most European small cars. It didn’t quite turn out that way.

Originally intended to be ridden without a helmet, the C1 turned into a sales flop after several European countries refused to exempt C1 riders from existing helmet laws. Despite the bike’s roll cage and studies that showed helmet-wearers who also used the C1’s integrated seat belt had worse neck injuries in low-speed crashes, the British government mandated helmet use. Sweden paradoxically required C1 riders to wear helmets but outlawed them from wearing seat belts. Partially as a result of lost sales in Britain, the C1 was discontinued in 2002 and was never offered in the United States.

BMW Malaysia Confident Of Good Sales In 2009

BMW Malaysia Sdn Bhd is cautiously optimistic over the prospects of the premium car market in the country amid the challenging economic situation at the moment.

Sales in luxury cars in Malaysia, which is about 9,000 annually, has remained resilient although other segments have dropped significantly, managing director Geoffrey Briscoe told a press conference after the media launch of two new models of the BMW 7 Series here.

He said BMW sold 3,715 cars last year, an increase of 12 percent compared with the previous year, and would be happy to maintain the volume this year.

"A lot of people still have the money. The buyers are there," he said.

BMW launched the BMW 740Li and 750Li today.
